Dancing at The ULA

When students arrive at the studio they will prepare for lessons in the on-site changing rooms. It is important that all students have practical dance gear to change in to and that their trainers are clean; not the ones that are worn from the street into the Centre. All this should be done prior to the start of class, so that when classes do begin students are ready to go straight into the group warm up.

The warm up will last for approximately 5 minutes, this is not strenuous, and is designed to get the students moving and

ready to 'learn in' the new moves.

For the older students there will be a brief body strengthening 'fun drill'. This is nothing to be worried about, but a small circuit of short exercises to focus on the core muscle groups. No one is forced to do anything that they do not want to and can rest when they want. This part of the class lasts no more than 5 minutes and aids body conditioning, supporting the cardiovascular exercise that students automatically receive from the dancing.

35 – 40 minutes of studio time is given over to learning new dances and routines. As the classes will naturally be of mixed ability, students are able to work at their own pace within the structure of the class. After learning in the dance, time will be given to go over any problem areas and a chance for students to go through the dance for themselves. All students then perform the dance together before breaking into smaller practice groups. It is important that students continue to practice the dances in their own time.

The last 5 minutes of class will be used for a brief body cool down and the next weeks class outline is explained.

It is important for students to remember that the classes are there for enjoyment; designed for them to have fun and to develop the confidence to relax into them. Some moves, just like most dancing disciplines, may prove difficult at first. However, with perseverance, success will come in time and it's a great way to be challenged.

The ULA holds regular showcase events for family and friends to attend to watch the performances given by the students at the Centre.
